Alex Peter uses burn marks to create wonderful art

Alex Peter is a 25 year old Pyrography artist, this means he uses a method that decorates wood or other materials by using burn marks on them. He starts off by using a pencil to sketch his subject on a board, then completely burns the image with the smoke from his blow lamp. After this, he goes ahead to use a razor blade or sand paper to carve the patterns out  until he achieves the desired shape or texture of his subject. When ready, he sprays the piece with a fixative to stop the colours from running.

Alex is a trained accountant. Art for him is just a hobby and he is self taught. Today he makes a living off art because he decided to pursue his passion. He fully started in 2016 and has exhibited twice. He is also a hyper-realist artist and plans to own an art school in the future.

Nigeria's Tomato Paste Processors Faced With Cheap Imports

     Tomato paste is the key ingredient in many popular Nigerian dishes like jollof rice and tomato stew. We can afford to splash out on tomato puree for our dishes because the country is the highest producer of tomato in Africa, producing about 1.5 million tonnes annually. The sad part is that 45 percent of the entire produce perishes.      Consumers spend 360 million US dollars on tomato paste import from countries such as Italy and China. The Mile 12 market in Ketu - Lagos, is the biggest one stop tomato shop in West Africa and has a daily turnover of about 1,500 metric tonnes of tomatoes.      The inability of farmers to feed a nation of 170 million people has led to an increasing reliance on imported food.      Last year the government effectively banned the import of almost 700 goods to prevent a currency collapse and encourage local manufacturing. Tiwa seeks to restore our forgotten folk-tale tradition

If you are an 80's child like me and grew up watching Tales by Moonlight on NTA (Nigeria Television Authority) then you will understand why this story struck a chord when I first saw it.      As usual I was strolling on the streets of Instagram when I saw a post by @Lagoshousewife about this bear that tells African folk tales. Immediately, my child hood flashed before me.     You see, folk tales were traditionally an important learning tool before the introduction of formal education. Children will sit on the floor, surrounding either a parent or grand parent who told them stories about the tortoise or the dog, and these stories always ended with a moral lesson.
