Greeting Cards: A Rebirth?

Greeting cards seem to be a dying tradition. Sometime ago in July, on a Saturday night, my husband got a late call to attend a birthday lunch the next day. This call came from someone who we can never say no to even if she had told us 30 minutes before the lunch. So on Sunday afternoon, thank God we had something that could pass for a gift, we set out hoping to get a birthday card on our way. After checking two shops without success, we bought the only thing we found in the third shop for 800 naira. To cut a long story short, the card was too poor to give out, so we just dropped it in the car.
This shows that as people began to gravitate towards sending messages through mediums like BBM, Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, Emails, text messages and so many others, shops began to stock less of cards, especially quality cards.
We interviewed a man who opened a shop over 19 years ago specifically for cards but today he says the cards only occupy about 20 percent of the entire shop.
On birthday or wedding anniversaries, you just wake up and in less than a minute you have either received or sent a wish to someone in another part of the world.
Years ago it was not like that, you had to buy cards, write a special message, and either 'snail' mail or physically deliver it to the person.
Two Nigerians, Wamide Oteju and Abodunrin Opanuga are bent on bringing this tradition back, but in a faster and more efficient way. Just go to their site, choose the size of card you want, the colour, the picture, the words, your delivery date and address of who you want to send it to. Everything is done and printed here, and don't worry, for the lovers of everything foreign, there is absolutely no difference between their cards and the ones produced by Hallmark.
I love cards, I met my husband 12 years ago, I still have cards from 12 years ago, and I will forever cherish them.
"Greetings World" just opened in July 2014 and I think with the right strategies, they will get there. It may be a tough road but, with the passion they both have for the card business, there can only be one outcome.

Rare Super Blood Moon By Midnight Today

     We expect to see a bloody moon from midnight today, Sunday 28, 2015 between the hours of 12 midnight to 6am. The bloody moon, when it occurs will last for about an hour. A bloody moon occurs because the moon is very close to the earth, making it extremely bright. According to NASA this has only happened five times since 1900, the last one was in 1982, and the next one will be in 2033.      Everything has been tied around this bloody moon, from it being the end of the world, to volcanoes erupting, to earthquakes and all of that. In fact I just read on christian.com that in the US state of Utah, people are already stock piling on dried foods and emergency stuff. They are so convinced something will happen. The world had ended so many times in the past, yet these end time propagators don't just stop, they just find a new date and continue.

Ending the long walk in the desert; A story of modern day slavery

I asked him why he decided to leave for Europe through the desert. He responded in the local Nigerian pidgin parlance: "I learn carpenter work for here, no body gree help me start up my own place, my oga pursue me, my people no gree help. My friend tell me say make I come make we commot this country, I no even know were we dey go until we reach desert and I no fit turn back again. Na only ghost I dey see for road. The thing wey I suffer for Libya nko? Two whole years! From one prison to another, from one slave master to another. My mouth no fit talk am." Since February 2017, more than five thousand Nigerian migrants have been repatriated from Libya. These are our brothers and sisters who left the country mostly by road, hoping to get to Libya, and cross over to Europe through the Mediterranean. However, they got stuck. Several of them faced exploitation and abuse, some were sold into slavery, some were kept in prison for months, living on water and little or no food.
